By far, the most common question I am asked by parents is “when should I bring my child to see the orthodontist?” I follow the American Association of Orthodontists recommendation that children to be seen by an orthodontist at 7 years of age. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but we can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment. However, a short “Phase One” treatment is sometimes needed between ages 7-10 to help ensure healthy growth and development. At your child’s dental visits, your dentist should be able to tell you when the optimal time might be to see an orthodontist.
I have a lot more information on this topic and a variety of other commonly asked questions under the “treatment” heading. Also, you can visit the American Association of Orthodontists website for more information about braces and find member doctors in your area. Visit www.braces.org
